I really have been giving some thought to this final Key Point Paper. I have had several ideas on what the topic should be. I couldn't make a decision. Then a light popped on in my head and I said to myself "that's it, Decisions, Decisions, Decisions". Everyone goes through everyday making all kinds of decisions. Never a day goes by when every person has to make some kind of a decision about something. There is an entire chapter on decisions and included in the chapter is a section on my applied topic talk, that of brainstorming. I will elaborate on any number of Models of Decision Making (Kinicki/Kreitner pg. 248) processes as well as styles, dynamics and biases. There are two broad approaches to making decisions. There is a rational model which may be considered to be completely objective and the decision is made with all information available. In this model there is a proposed four-step sequence that is to be used. First, identifying the problem. A problem exists when an actual situation and a desired situation differ. The book references differing situations or problems in business. Problems occur in our everyday life. Actual situations and desired situations differ almost every day for all of us. It's how you deal with them that makes the difference. After you have identified a problem, the next logical step is what are you going to do about it, or Generating Solutions. If your situation is one that you deal with everyday, or a routine or repetitive decision that one is easy. There are decision rules that should be in place for determining what the decision will be. It is the non-routine or novel problems that might give you a more difficult time. In that case indentify all of the known solutions, look at the options closely and determine which one is best suited for the task and then Select a Solution. Optimally, decision makers want to choose the alternative with the greatest value, or maximizing the expected utility of an outcome....
