SIR ISAAC NEWTON

Isaac Newton’s discoveries and theories are so numerous and variable that many consider him to be one of the greatest scientists of all time. It is strikingly interesting though, that this great scientist, who actually spent more time on theology than science, was born on the most important religious day of the year.

Isaac Newton was born on Christmas day, December 25, 1643 to a farming family at Woolsthorpe, Lincolnshire, England. Newton attended King Edward VI Grammar School in Grantham. He seemed to be more interested in the way things worked than in studying. As a young boy, he began inventing small items such a windmill that could grind corn and wheat, and a water clock run by water’s dropping force. His father had died three months prior to his birth, so he left school at fourteen to help his mother on the farm.

Newton later finished his elementary schooling and with the help of a small inheritance, continued his education at Trinity College, Cambridge University in 1661. While there, he was able to continue his curiosities of mathematics, science and physics. Education at that time was based on the thoughts of Aristotle, but Newton was eager to look beyond to the modern thinkers such as Descartes. Newton acquired a Bachelor of Arts degree in January, 1665. He soon after moved back home because of the plague outbreak throughout Europe. Isaac Newton returned to Cambridge in 1667 and became professor of mathematics in 1669 (Hummel).

He had little time for women. Aside from an early teenage courting, he remained single throughout his life. His determination to consider mathematical problems, focusing on them until he had solved any mysteries behind them, left him little time for a social life.
