Major Personality Attributes Influencing OB

People differ in the degree to which they like or dislike themselves and whether they see themselves as capable and effective. This self-perspective is the concept of core self-evaluation. People who have positive core self-evaluations like themselves, see themselves as effective, capable, and in control of their environment. Those with negative core self-evaluations tend to dislike themselves, question their capabilities and view themselves as powerless over their environment. An individual’s core self-evaluation is determined by two main elements: self-esteem and locus of control.

Self-esteem is defined a individuals’ degree of liking or disliking themselves and the degree to which they think they are worthy or unworthy as a person. People who have a positive view of themselves and their capabilities tend to like themselves and see themselves as valuable. People with low self-esteem, are more susceptible to external influences, they are more likely to seek approval from others and are more prone to conform to the beliefs and behaviors of those they respect than are people who believe in themselves.

Locus of control is the degree to which people believe that they are masters of their own fate. Internals are individuals who believe that they control what happens to them. For example, if you think your success in school is depend on your ability and hardstudying, you have a lot of confidence in your study. This would reflect a positive core self-evaluation. Externals are individuals who believe that what happens to them is controlled by outside forces such as luck or chance. For example, you think your success in school is determined by the whim of the professor or by blind luck, you probably don’t have a lot of confidence in your ability to get straight A’s.
