Asses the nature of globalisation and crime in contemporary society.

Globalisation is the idea that all the countries are becoming linked due to improved communication and travel. Due to globalisation crimes such as drug trafficking, human trafficking, terrorism, corruption and war crimes have all become increasingly common, and easier to do. Not only has it increased these crimes and made them easier it is also the idea that when a crime, or some type of corruption is to happen in another state or country it is to affect all of the other countries. Globalisation is changing the face of crime, and although it is mostly seen as a bad thing, in some cases it can be positive.

Organised crime is a classic example of how crime has changed due to globalisation. Organised crime is more often than not very highly organised on a global scale, and is usually white collar rather than blue collar. Crimes like this are things like human trafficking and arms dealing. Crimes like this did not happen 100 years ago, but now they do and this is because of globalisation. Giddens explained that globalisation is shrinking the world making it easier to get places. This supports the idea that it is easier for criminals to organise crime with people from the other side of the world. A lot easier than it was before things like mobile phones and the internet existed.

Green crime or environmental crime can be an example of globalisation. Green crime is a crime that is committed to purposely harm, or affect the environment. These are crimes such as deforestation, in very high profile cases it is usually a white collar crime, but in minor cases such as littering it can also be blue collar crime. A real life example of green crime could be the BP oil spill that happened that killed millions of animals in the gulf of Mexico.
