City Council Sewage Vote FRQ II

(a) One component of the sewage that is targeted for removal by primary treatment could be any large material such as rocks, gravel, and sand. One component of the sewage that is targeted for removal by secondary treatment would be a dissolved organic material like human waste or other things like pathogens.

(b) The primary treatment being rocks and other natural solid objects could be removed from the liquid component by taking large filters and cleaning them out. This is separating the solids from the liquids and makes the process flow much quicker. The treatment for the secondary process (pathogens) could be to use disinfectant to clear out most of it. You could possibly use chlorine and ozone to get the job done.

(c) Things such as particulates and other liquids are cleared out from the sewage during the primary and secondary treatment create a good amount of solid material and that means that it has to be disposed somewhere else.

(d) Landfill problems would be that it takes up a considerable amount of space. Greenhouse gases that are made during this time can escape into the atmosphere. That causes global warming. Some agricultural problems would be that humans and animal health problems are connected to bacterial waste. That contaminates food crops. Also field runoff results to the surface water getting contaminated as well.

(e) One pollutant that is targeted during disinfection would be pathogens. One commonly used method of disinfecting sewage pipes would be chlorine and ozone. In this method they can simply pour them down the pipes and the chemicals can get rid of viruses and other problems in the sewage system.

(f) A United States federal law would be the federal Water and Pollution Control Act which was created in 1956. This law helped control the sewage problems that occurred in the pipes and helped maintain a clean sewage system that wasn’t full of pathogen and other harmful viruses.
