There are about 6,500 spoken languages in the world today. The number of different languages that are spoken in the United States alone is rather impressive. Research shows that most of the world today is bilingual, in Europe about fifty-six percent of the population is bilingual and thirty-five percent in Canada. According to the 2000 census, ten percent of the American population was bilingual. Today about seventeen percent speak a second language. In other words the number of bilingual people is slowly increasing in the United States; however, we are still playing catch up with the rest of the world.

Research shows that younger children learn a second language faster, this is because when a child is exposed to a second language at an early age the brain is still developing and processing, so the second language is a part of that development, the earlier children are taught a second language the easier it will be for them to learn it. Because of this most of the other countries in the world teach their students more than one language at an early age. Research also suggests that children who are bilingual may develop more flexibility in their thinking as a result of processing information through two different languages. It can also help them understand their first language better. It is important that learning a second language is encouraged, because it can become a great advantage for the future.

The society in which we live today is very rich in culture. That is why more than one language should be taught in schools at an early age. Learning a second language can help one understand what others are saying and help them understand those culture as well. It can create a powerful link between people and give a deeper knowledge of different ideas and traditions. Children who are bilingual also find it easier to learn and speak more languages later on.
