The difference between genders has been seen in different aspects of the human lifestyle for numerous years. The manner in which males and females are viewed in our society deals mainly with the appropriate gender roles that are applied to each. The way individuals see themselves and others of the same or opposite gender are determined by the norms of the gender their particular society has placed on them. Our society has governed the manner in which women and men are treated in the workforce and have decided what treatments are acceptable and frowned upon. The controversy on whether males and females should be receiving equal treatment when it comes to working conditions and wages has been in question ever since women were allowed to enter the workforce. The amount of opportunities that is available for women are limited in comparison to the ones that are in the reach of men. The overall population in the United States is too large of a sample to observe this controversy, focusing on a smaller population such as Rutgers University is much more appropriate. When observing the differences in gender roles in the work place at Rutgers University, the main focus were the differences in wages and the educational background of each, the working conditions received by each gender, and the promotion availability attainable for each. Studies have suggested that, "the average earnings of men employed in the Nation's metropolitan areas almost always exceed the earnings of women in the same occupation" (Buckley, 1). This illustrates that the differences in the employment environment between men and women are apparent and have been for numerous years. The topic on gender differences is one that will always be controversial and the equality between these two is something that might never be achievable.
