The team discussed the topics on channels for business communications, credibility and validity of sources, and developing effective arguments. The entire team was very comfortable with identifying channels for business communication and agreed that all types of channels are used everyday in each team member’s workplace. The team had a wide variety of occupations from health care to administrative and sales positions. Communication channels such as e-mail, telephone conversations, voicemails, and face-to-face conversations are used to communicate with vendors, customers, and other employees. Face-to-face conversations are used most often when communicating with co-workers and when discussing issues with the managers. E-mail and telephone conversations are used for less formal and routine communication.

The team was also comfortable with evaluating the credibility and validity of sources of information. This topic is crucial to many of the team members’ everyday tasks such as getting FDA approval, doing employment verifications, reports, verifying credentials, and following state laws or policies. Some jobs require auditing for sources of the information before it can be released to the public. Validating the source of information is important so the employee can have the confidence that he/she is doing the work properly. A credible source of information is vital to avoid lawsuits, follow policies and avoid making mistakes.

Some team members were uncomfortable with the topic on developing effective arguments. In the health care industry, effective arguments are necessary when there is miscommunication between patients and doctors. The administrative field requires enforcing policies and proper training procedures where the knowledge of effective arguments allows the employee to assure compliance with those policies.
