Assignment 3: Ethical Values, Principles and Rules; Assessing the Code

Directions: This assignment is worth 30 points. Corporate Codes of Conduct typically articulate both the company’s values and ethical principles and specific rules that employees must follow. For this assignment, you will be identifying some of those values, principles and rules in your company’s code. You will also be asked to assess the Code and whether you think it would be effective in guiding employees to “do the right thing.”

2. Does the Code of Conduct effectively communicate the company's values to employees? Provide at least three examples.

Ans. Yes! This code of conduct effectively communicates the company’s values to employees. The three examples are the following:

1. HP states in its code “We’re accountable for our actions, responsible for their consequences, and proud of our efforts”. (Page 6)

2. HP states in its code that “We take our ethical responsibilities very seriously, and we must work together to address any issues that arise under our Standards of Business Conduct (SBC), related policies and local laws.” (Page 7)

3. HP states in its code “We expect our employees to speak up and report what doesn’t seem right, and we provide a variety of avenues for employees to ask questions or voice their concern.” (Page 7)

3. Identify at least three ethics principles mentioned in the Code.

Ans. The three ethics principle mentioned in the code are firstly, “Do not behave in a disrespectful, hostile, violent.” (Page 11). Secondly, “Refuse to accept or tolerate sexual harassment.”(page11) and lastly, “Do not discriminate.”(Page 11)
