1. Ch.11 - 6 -- Below are listed some objects of varying degrees of abstraction. Suggest
properties of each of these objects that can be measured by each of the four basic types of scales.
a. Store customers:
Nominal Scale: Customers can be classified by gender, race or ethnicity, marital status, first
time customer or returning customer.
Ordinal Scale: Customers can be classified as reward card holders, and very frequent, frequent
or non-frequent buyers.
Interval Scale: The average attitude value of the customers and the attitude value of the sales
associates.
Ratio Scale: The customers, classified by age, that spend the most money, the average amount
they do spend, the average amount of time they spend in the store, and the average return rate of
the customers.
b. Voter attitudes:
Nominal Scale: Voters registered as Democrats, Republicans, Conservatives, Tea Party,
Independents, etc.
Ordinal Scale: The ranking of candidates by voters’ preference.
Interval Scale: The average attitude value of the voters and the political candidates.
Ratio Scale: The age of registered voters.
c. Hardness of steel alloys:
Nominal Scale: Classification of low- alloy steels and high-alloy steels; soft steel or hard steel.
Ordinal Scale: Classification of the hardness, wear resistance,or strength of the steel.
Interval Scale: Rating of the hardness of the alloys.
Ratio Scale: The amount of nickel, aluminum, chromium, etc., comprising the various alloys.
d. Preference for a particular common stock:
Nominal Scale: The industry classification of stock: DOW, NASDAQ, S&P, etc.
Ordinal Scale: The ranking of stock according to stockholder preference.
Interval Scale: The rating and the cost of each stock.
Ratio Scale: The rate of change of price of the various stocks.
