Specific Purpose: To persuade my audience to pursue/open a small business.

I. Attention:

A. Attention Getter: A story I’d like all of you to hear is about a man named Scott Nichols. This is from a passage of a 2011 article from the website South Bend Tribune.“He sinks into the couch, his gaze traveling from his wife to the television to the darkness outside. His mind settles into another round of “What if?” As in: What if we don’t have cash to buy milk, eggs, bread or diapers? What if our unemployment benefits run out? What if we never find jobs? Scott Nichols thinks of the option the 39-year-old husband and father of two has hoped to avoid since being laid off nine months ago. “Looks like we’ll have to go to your mom’s,” Scott says to his wife. Moving to her mother’s would mean returning to a rundown town where they grew up, which makes him feel dirty inside and out. They would sleep in her basement jammed with forgotten furniture and a few steps away from cat litter boxes.”

Preview: I will be explaining the details of what unemployment can entail, and a probable solution to keep people occupied for a profit.

II. Problem:

A. In the United States, there are millions of Americans without jobs.

1. The U.S Department of Labor – Bureau of Labor Statistics displayed the amount of people without a job on their website. There are 12 million Americans over the age of 16 that have no jobs.

• 5 million out of 12 million are unemployed without a job for 27 weeks or more.

• An approximate 16% Americans are in need of a full-time job, and the longer they stay out of a job, the harder it is to get one.

B. Unemployment is expected to lead to these three significant factors.

1. First, unemployment will leave you without money.
