Section 1.1 Important Details of the Article
This Guide aims to help publishers and consumers of HTML data to use it well. It instructs publishers and consumers on how to implement the three main types of syntaxes for embedding data into an HTML document.
It is assumed that publishers and consumers will want to choose a single format rather than mixing multiple formats, as this will mean less markup in his/her page and make the task of publishing much easier.
Microdata requires the use of attributes that are introduced by HTML5 and RDFa can be used with XHTML 1.1 or HTML5, while microformats can be used with all versions of HTML. Your organization’s publishing guidelines may need to be brought up to date to sanction use of microdata or RDFa.
Section 1.2 Identify and Define and Technical Terms
Format – Combination of syntax and types and properties from one or more vocabularies.
Syntax – A set of conventions for parsing data from an HTML page into a data structure.
Vocabulary – A set of terms for describing entities within a particular domain. Different mechanisms are used for describing vocabularies.
Entities – Things such as people or events. Entities are used to implement reserved characters or to express characters that cannot easily be entered with the keyboard.
Types – Indicates what kind of entity they are and a number of properties that have values.
Properties – Provide data about an entity.
Values – Provide data about an entity.
Microdata – A WHATWG HTML specification used to nest semantics within existing content on a web page.
Resource Description Framework (RDF) – A family of World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) specifications originally designed as a metadata data model. It has come to be used as a general method for conceptual description or modeling of information that is implemented in web resources....
