Due to the rapid development of technology in the world, most companies are now engaged in using computers or machines to handle different kinds of accounting activities. With this, various accounting related professional organizations encouraged accounting schools to include courses on accounting information systems in their accounting curriculum to help accounting students understand and give them the basic knowledge of the design, operations, risks, and controls of an accounting information systems. Nevertheless, the accountancy department of De La Salle University now includes a subject called MODMIT2-Accounting Information System in their accounting curriculum.

The course is mainly composed of three parts. We started off with an overview of the business processes, and then came the first part of course which is about control procedures for accounting information systems. Afterwards, we took up topics on information systems controls for systems reliability, which has five fundamental principles including security, confidentiality, privacy, processing integrity and availability. Lastly, the third part of the course tackled the different financial transaction cycles and core business processes, specifically the revenue cycle, expenditure cycle, production cycle, HRM/ payroll cycle and the general ledger and reporting systems. Together with that, we also discussed the risks and controls involved in the processing of accounting information in a computerized environment.

As a student, I could say that the course subject is really helpful for us especially now that auditing firms are using accounting softwares to do their auditing activities. I also learned that in every part of technology, there will always be a possibility of a system failure. Different control procedures that were discussed in class helped me understand and know different kinds of procedures on how to handle these kinds of unforeseen software problems carefully.
