Faith Terim, a Turkey entrepreneur established Tempo Ltd in 1989 in Antalya Turkey. The natural of Terim business was purchasing foreign goods and selling them for a profit in Turkey. As the Turkish economy hit some trouble times, Terim continued to look for new markets. Terim pursued new customers in Bulgaria, Romania, and Greece. Terim was presented with an opportunity to provide chemicals to his customers and accept kereste (lumber) as payment. Knowing that he could find a market for the kereste in the Turkish market because little was produce in Turkey and new construction and earthquake renovations were underway (Woods & Murphy, 2010, p 109). Terim now would need to determine the logistics costs of moving the bartered lumbar from North Korea into Turkey to decide if this deal would be profitable for Tempo Ltd.

Terim Romanian connection presented an opportunity to sell chemicals to the North Koreans for the purpose of using the chemicals for fertilizer. Due to sanctions against North Korea, Terim knew doing business with them could be risky; but not willing to pass up a deal, he justified his decision to do business North Korea by convincing himself that if he didn’t sell to the North Koreans, someone else would. The decision to do business with the North Koreans challenged Terim’s ethical principles. Before even getting the deal from the Koreans, Terim would have to bribe Korean officials to secure the deal. Also, Terim had to determine between two options on how to move the lumbar from North Korea to Turkey.

Terim’s first option is to send the lumber to Romania where it could be shipped in legally. The lumbar would first have to be shipped to Romania by the Black Sea. The second option is to send the lumber to Syria where trucks could deliver it to Turkey.
