Chapter 14: Social Psychology
Last, but not least, we are going to touch on a brief overview of the field of Social Psychology. This is your last time to shine, so show me what you know! (
Social psychology is the branch of psychology that studies persons and their relationships with others and with groups and with society as a whole. It studies the fascinating actions and interactions of the individual—you—with others. Sexuality, mob response, and politics are just a few of the many areas studied in social psychology.
1. Read Chapter 14: Social Psychology
a. Skim, read, and get yourself into the idea of social psychology. ( There is no
quiz on this chapter!
2. Social Psychology Assignment (15 points)
a. First, using your textbook, define social psychology and the fundamental attribution error. (5 points)
b. The Stanford Prison Experiment is an excellent piece of evidence for how powerful the situation is in determining behavior. Learn more about this experiment at http://www.prisonexp.org/. Follow the slide show.
c. Describe the Stanford Prison Experiment. What, specifically, did the researchers do? What were the results of the study? What are the real life implications of this research (what are the life lessons)? (10 points)
c. Your Social Psychology Assignment should be put into the appropriate Dropbox folder by Sunday, December 9th at 11:59pm.
3. CHOOSE your assignment from A or B (So, complete ONE of the two options below):
A. Two other important set of research studies includes Ashe’s conformity research and Milgram’s obedience research. Using your textbook, briefly describe the methods (What did the researchers and those in the experiment do?) and the results (What happened in the studies?).
