Romeo and Juliet pg 211-243

* Balthasar delivers the news that Juliet has died after Romeo, in soliloquy, talks about his dream where Juliet finds Romeo (foreshadowing). Romeo finds that everything is going against him and Juliet.

* Romeo is very mad. He wants to rush right away to Verona to see Juliet. Balthasar tries to stop Romeo, for he is looking pale but Romeo just can’t seem to control himself. He has received the letter from Friar Lawrence and demands that Balthasar gets the horses ready. When Romeo is alone, he speaks that he will lie with Juliet tonight, together. Romeo suddenly remembers a druggist that he met recently. He is on the edge of poverty and can barely feed himself. Romeo thinks that he might be able to find the right poison to kill him when he is together with Juliet.

* Romeo calls out to the Apothecary who is law-abiding. Romeo offers him forty ducats for a fast speeding poison that would kill him as quickly as a bullet is shot from cannon. The Apothecary at first refuses for he knows that if he does sell such a thing without knowing the purpose of use would result in death. But Romeo nudges at the druggist’s weak point. Money. Apothecary does not want to break the law but his poverty is giving in.

* The Apothecary gives Romeo the poison explaining that the poison is strong enough to kill twenty men, no problem. Romeo then hands over the money, saying that it is worse than poison to men. Romeo tells the druggist to get some food and put himself into a better condition. In scene two, Friar John, the supposed messenger that was supposed to send Friar Lawrence’s letter, explains that due to a sick relative, he could not leave and could not make it to Mantua.

* Friar Lawrence is shocked that the letter was not delivered for the letter was very very important. Friar Lawrence asks Friar John to accompany Juliet in the three hours that she might awake while he goes to write to Mantua.
