Think of a misunderstanding you experienced when communicating with someone else at work, home, or school. Then fill in the blanks of the chart.

Misunderstanding work

An employee texted and says “I am sick today, I will not be in until the meeting, but can come on Wednesday if you need me to make up today”. Boss texts back and states “Ok go ahead and cancel the bank meeting, I have changed my mind and decided to go with another property”.

Wed the Boss texts the employee and wants to know why they are not at work?

Who was the sender? The Employee

Who was the receiver? The Boss

What was the message?

What was the misunderstanding that occurred? The Boss never responded back to the employee to come in on Wednesday so he assumed they were coming in but didn’t convey that to the employee.

How could the misunderstanding been avoided? It could have been avoided by the Boss texting the employee back and letting them know to go ahead and come in Wednesday to make up the Monday.

1. What did you learn about the communication process from this activity?

I learned that a lot of people make assumptions’ and that by doing this miscommunication happens. By just simply responding to the message and letting the Employee know what you expected would have stopped any and all forms of miscommunication.

2. What seemed to be the main cause of the misunderstanding?

The lack of response from the Boss, he only communicated that he wanted to cancel the meeting because he changed his mind. He never communicated that it...
