Digging Deeper into Ethical Leadership

Abstract

Ethical leadership knows the core values of the society and/or environment that you are leading. Ethics defined is the discipline dealing with what is good or bad and with moral duty and obligation. A Military leader will obviously have a different set of governing principals than a corporate business leader. Religious leaders will be guided by the doctrines’ within their faith. A leader of a Terrorist organization is viewed by its followers as having righteous principals. My point is that defining and writing about Ethical Leadership is very difficult without focus and context. Because this is a Business 101 course in the United States of America, one canuse the general viewpoint of American Corporate Business to discuss the nuances of defining Ethical Leadership.

Ethical Leadership

Most versions of ethical leadership define a leader who has good values and a strong character to administer decisions that appear to be good for the greater good. Ethical behavior is described using morals as a component that binds the decision making process to create the best outcome. Most would agree that are Morals are defined and imposed within the environment we live and work. Although the word “Ethics” comes from the Greeks, ethical decisions have faced mankind from the beginning of intelligent thought and continue to develop within the context of each society (Llrewellyn, 1986).

The definition of Ethical Leadership is understood that the environment plays a role in shaping the principals which guide the judgment of ethical behavior. Today much of American Business is being scrutinized trying to findfault for the down-turn in the economy. We are experiencing a re-shaping of Ethical Business as we examine the damages from corporate greed, finite resources, and environmentally harmful manufacturing means. We have been told that...
