The Driving Forces of Change: Organization Transformation at Macro and Micro levels

1. Abstract Change driven by external and internal factors is the only constant. Organization transformation is the sum of many changes across the organization. Strategic alignment and management of benefit, cost and risk are important areas of transformation. Transformation may require enormous time and money and changes in people, process and technology. It needs a systematic approach to ensure that the desired benefit is achieved, risk is managed and time and costs are minimized. The approach in this paper suggests use of SWOT, Balanced Score Card, 7S, ERM, Lean Six Sigma and Portfolio/Program/Project Management methodology. While vision and mission define the ‘TO BE’ aspect of the transformation initiative, SWOT reveals the ‘AS IS’ status. The gap between ‘TO BE’ and ‘AS IS’ status is filled with transformation strategies and their subsequent implementation using six Ps. Balanced Scorecard translate transformation strategies into SMART operational objectives. 7 S framework makes the alignment among hard and soft organizational elements work. ERM manages risk in a holistic way strategically, tactically and operationally. Once these are in place, Project Management guidelines and Lean Six Sigma techniques can be used to manage the implementation and operation. 2. Introduction Change is inevitable. Adaptability and systematic management of change are keys to survival and success in the corporate world. Driving forces of changes are evolving. My experience in the management of changes in various organizations in both developed and developing economies has corroborated the impression that organizational transformation is successful when it happens at Macro and Micro level and is the outcome of systematic and integrated management of many significant changes across the organization.
