The Legalization of Marijuana

With the current uproar from the American public to have a democratic system so they can maximize their rights to choose their owne behaviors, the debate over the use of marijuana being legal has risen to the top. This debate of legalizing marijuana has come up between government-supporting conservatives and individual-supporting liberals. Since the federal governement began the policy of treating marijuana as a Schedule 1 drug it has stired up a lot of debate by the voting population and their politicians. When the governement classified it as a Schedule 1 drug they were basically saying it has the potential to be the highest abused substance and it has not known medical use. This debate has bounced the future of marijuana in the United States. Some people believe that they governement should stay strong with their current policy of punishing marijuana use and to see to eradicate it from the American culture, while others believe we should permit the use as a controlled substance just like tobacco and alcohol is.

History and Background

Looking back through the history of marijuana use it is amazing to see how long ago you can trace its use. The first documented use was around the time of 2500 B.C. in the ancient Chinese cultures. It was being use as a mild euphoria for those who ingested it, and an effective general pain reliever. Since then it has been doucmented that the spread of the marijuana plant sperad to cultures all over the world. The plant arrived in North America during the establishement of the British. During the colonial and Union times marijuana was a widely used substance by doctors to help in pain relief and appetite inducement. There was even some during that time that used it for recreation use.
