Chapter 1

Introduction

1.0 Introduction

Insulator is a material that does not respond to an electrical voltage and completely resists the flow of electric charge. Insulators are used to protect user from the dangerous effects of electricity flowing through conductors. Sometimes the voltage in an electrical circuit can be quite high and dangerous. If the voltage is high enough, electric current can be made to flow through even materials that are generally not considered to be good conductors.

This project required to design, build, test and verify the 33kV outdoor insulator. The outdoor insulator refers to the insulator that is used to give electrical isolation between the conductor and tower and also to give mechanical support to the conductor .The item of the material that used in this project are melamine plate ( plastic plate ), non conductive rod ( PVC pipe), silicone glue and metal hook. The prototype will be tested with an experiment called wet and dry test .The test will be conducted at UTHM’s High Voltage Laboratory using HVAC voltage.

From the project, student has understood the concept to design, construct and test the HV insulator. Beside that, these projects also show the creativity of group’s member to create the best and good insulator. Student can relate the knowledge and theoretical concept into the design. A good insulator will be high in mechanical strength, free from impurities, high permittivity, high insulation resistance and high dielectric strength to withstand various conditions that may happen during operation. Further more students may learn how to improve their soft skills as well as effective communication skills trough out the process of projects.

Theoretical Analysis

2.1 Type of Insulator

There is a various type of design insulator in the market such as disc type, line-post type, pin type, cap-and-pin type and long rod type. Different types of line insulators are used, depending on voltage and mechanical...
