A successful company is judged not only by its profits, but the way it gives back to and supports its community. Without the latter, a company cannot truly be successful. In today’s economy, consumers have many choices. They like to feel that they are supporting companies that behave ethically, and give back to the communities that they belong. Company Q is a small local grocery store in a major city. Company Q will never grow and prosper unless they take a very hard look at their lack of support for the communities they serve. By reevaluating their role and obligation to give back to the people, they can play a more active part in their community, gain consumer loyalty, increase market share and therefore increase profits. Below I will dissect examples that site their current nonexistent level of social responsibility as well as give recommendations where Company Q could stand up and serve the communities they service, therefore increasing their social responsibility. Company Q has closed a couple of stores in less than desirable areas due to a loss in money. These stores were located in higher crime rate areas of the city. In closing these stores and laying off employees, they are only worsening the state of these communities. Employees that are laid off are more like to commit crime, use drugs and alcohol, go on public assistance, or end up in the hospital due to stress related illnesses. Empty storefronts provide temptation for vandalism, burglary and meeting places for crimes waiting to be committed. In simplest form, by closing these stores they are creating hardships for their customers that now must travel further to get the same services. By closing these stores, they showed their lack of social responsibility. Instead of closing these stores, Company Q could get involved with their community, offer free coffee to police officers on shift in order to increase their presence in the store and around the community.
