USING POWERPOINT IN ENHANCING STUDENTS’ UNDERSTANDING OF SELECTED EVENTS IN PHILIPPINE HISTORY

By: Erncef B. Borromeo

CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

One area of research in social studies education has focused on the views or attitudes of elementary and secondary students toward school and the subjects they study. This research presents an alarming picture of the status of social studies, when compared to other subjects such as Math and English. The results of this research have shown that students do not view their social studies classes as favorably as they do most other subjects. This has been the case for many years (Ellis, Fouts and Glenn, 1991).

Shaughnessy and Haladyna reviewed the findings of research over the past several decades and their findings must be of considerable concern to social studies teachers and prospective teachers. Dating back to studies as early as 1949, the research has shown that social studies classes are generally regarded by elementary students as one of their least favorite subjects. In addition, student attitudes toward social studies actually decline from grade 4 to grade 8. The same consistently negative findings regarding social studies were identified at the secondary level. These findings seem to be fairly consistent across most of the research. Perhaps most alarming for the secondary social studies teacher, there is research to suggest that these attitudes toward social studies become more prevalent the higher the grade level of the student-that is “the higher the grade level, the lower the attitude” (Shaughnessy and Haladyna, 1985).

The use of power point is to enhance the students understanding and attitude toward selected events in Philippine history. It is very important to use power point in teaching social studies because it will greatly reduce if not eradicate the perception of boredom of the students in this subject. The incorporation of technology in the social studies curriculum...
