Tobacco is the product made from nicotine leaves, which make a highly addictive substance. Most people do not actually realize what chemicals they are consuming when they use tobacco. Some of the 2,000 chemicals in tobacco includes: Arsenic, which is used in rat poison, Methane, a component of rocket fuel, Ammonia, which is found in floor cleaner, Cadmium, which is used in batteries, Formaldehyde, which is used to preserve body tissue, Butane, or lighter fluid, and Hydrogen Cyanide, the poison used in gas chambers. Overall, tobacco is aharmful drug that is known as both a stimulant and a depressant because of the rush of energy, and the calming of nerves that one gets after usage. Tobacco kills more people in the United States annually than car accidents, suicide, homicide, and any other drugs (“Actual Causes Of Deaths In The United States, 2000”). Judging by solely that fact, one can wonder why the number one cause for deaths is still legal in our country. No kind of tobacco is safe, whether using cigarettes, snuff, cigars, chewing tobacco, or a pipe. Even if one does not use tobacco in any form, secondhand smoke makes them liable to diseases. Because tobacco is not beneficial for anything in the United States, this costly and harmful substance that kills or causes diseases to many users should be banned. Tobacco causesvarious amounts of diseases, illnesses, and subtle health defects, some which are fatal, and others as minor as a cough, depending on how long one has been smoking. One of the most serious common diseases among cigarette smokers is cancer. One can develop cancer of the lungs, larynx, mouth, esophagus, or bladder.
