With any job or everyday life one must take into consideration their behaviors, decisions, and actions. All will bring their own set of values within an organization and communicate their reasons behind them all. Many people will take the values from those around them including the company and incorporate them in their performance and life. Some will give and take very little ‘value’ from their personal and organizational settings, while others might be somewhere in the middle. Each person can gain valuable information and improve not only their job performance, but personal life as well.

List your values on a sheet of paper.

One way to get your thoughts of your own value is to list them or write them down. I accomplished this in a matter of five minutes, so time is not a factor. Work values such as, arriving to work early; treat everyone regardless of status with the upmost respect; identify everyone as my customer; work more than a full eight hours; lead by example; and so on. Once your own values are listed, we need to look at the organization’s values and begin to align them.

We need to align personal and organizational values.

Employees need to be treated as we all liked to be treated. “Treat your employees well and they'll turn around and treat members the same way” (Lanphear, 2001). How can an organization promote their own values on employees if they say something but do another? Employees need to be surveyed and asked about their own value…supervisors need to identify this and communicate to the employee how their value is aligned with the company. Another way is to ask employees, by survey, “list your top 10 values”. Asking employees to help set or keep the organization’s values current get buy-in which supports the agreed upon value.
