Group Presentation Points Elaborated: The Natural Environment

2020:

* The increase in heat waves and the hotter temperatures that the BBC experiments predicted will negatively affect transport (mainly the underground) in the sense that it will make journeys more uncomfortable in the already extremely warm underground trains.

* Not everyone has a car and thus rely on public transportation to get to work, especially the trains. The heat making journeys unpleasant and adding health risks such as heat stroke means less people will be willing to leave their houses

* Outcomes include higher employee absenteeism and less physical shoppers in the stores – could mean more people will shop online so Tesco will need to increase the efficiency of their online stores to cope with the rise in the amount of users.

* Being a large company, the impact as well as the compensation for these issues will be on a colossal scale

2050:

* Tesco have made known their plans to become a zero-carbon business in 2050

* However, the costs associated with achieving low/zero-carbon is closely connected to scale density – as Tesco is a large cooperation, the zero-carbon system will be implemented on a grand scale thus implying that the costs incurred will be on a similar scale

* Therefore, it is a risky endeavour mainly because the zero-carbon stores may not run as efficiently as the previous stores and thus the costs incurred may not be worth risking – making the correct strategic decision will be challenging.

Benefits of Change:

* The predicted changes to the environment for 2020 and 2050 aren’t all necessarily bad

* For example, though the costs are high and there are risks in terms of how much gain will be obtained, taking measures to reduce the amount of carbon in the atmosphere increases the prospects of sustainability for younger/future generations

* Also, the growth of the BRIC economies essentially creates more job and business opportunities –...
