In my opinion, there are several factors that contribute to a greater number of records being managed by larger facilities. Small and medium sized facilities see fewer patients whereas large facilities see a greater number of patients and therefore manage more records. A larger facility has additional departments which also require the management of a greater number of records. Another factor that contributes to the greater number of records managed by a large facility is the amount of patient records managed and shared. The large facilities mange and share a significantly greater number of records than the small and medium sized facilities.

The challenges in small, medium, and large facilities are essentially the same in regard to ensuring the privacy and confidentiality of patients’ records. This may be accomplished by taking precautions to ensure the records are hidden from view of other patients. Small, medium and large facilities are all required to follow the guidelines set forth by HIPAA. The placement of records in specific locations that are private and out of view of other patients until the records are ready to be input into the computer is another way to ensure privacy and confidentiality of patients’ records. The biggest challenge is the problem of missing files that all facilities face. Lastly, in an effort to further ensure the confidentiality and privacy of patients’ records, facilities should store the patients’ records in some sort of coding system that is easily accessible to all employees of the office staff.

A lot depends on the size of the facility when facing challenges as opposed to the number of patients’ records that are managed on a daily basis. I believe the size of the facility is determined by the number of patients that are seen there on a daily basis as well as the number of departments within the facility.
