Pick one of the articles below (other than the assigned reading, The Life Cycle and Disability...) to read or find a similar article. Do some "anticipatory guidance" by writing down what a parent, sibling, grandparent or other family member can expect from the individual with that genetic disorder. This can be mental, behavior, medical, etc. Focus on only one developmental life stage (be sure to tell us what stage that is). Describe the source of this information--i.e., an observational study of toddlers with Treacher-Collins, a questionnaire of parents of adolescent boys with hemophilia, a review of research studies, etc.) This should be less than 1/4 of a page. Cite the article(s) and attach here as a Word document.

In the paper by Sari, Baser, and Turan on the experience of mothers of children with Down syndrome, mothers explained their experiences raising children with Down syndrome in a qualitative study with interviews by the researchers. Parents and other family members of children with Down syndrome throughout their lives will more than likely undergo some type of a social reaction be it positive or negative. Mothers in this study explained how they were apprehensive towards telling people that they have a child with Down syndrome because of the negative views on the family this diagnosis might evoke. Immediately after having their child, mothers may feel that it was their fault that their child was born with Down syndrome. Mothers may struggle with the balance of protecting their child from the tortures of people who don't understand and restricting all contact. Children with Down syndrome have an understanding of their situation and surroundings and may ask questions or become upset. Although they may have these feelings, children of all ages with Down syndrome have the ability to openly love and will show their love daily and mothers will see this after the first day.
