Communication Channels

During disaster preparedness there is technology available to enhance communication. Disasters happen when least expected and it is important to be prepared if and when a disaster happens. Disaster’s that may occur are earthquakes, tornados, tsunamis, and more and one form of technology that has made a difference in disaster preparedness is cellular telephones.  Using the similar technology of a mobile radio telephone, cellular telephones were invented around 1973.  Cellular telephones use to be the size of a brick, however; now days they are able to fit right in our pockets.  Cellular telephones work transmitting frequencies from a cellular tower to the cellular telephone.  With Smart Phones, a new form of cellular telephones, we are able to make cellular, send and receive e-mails, search the internet, watch TV, send text messages, and also use a GPS.  Cellular telephones can help improve the dissemination of information during disaster preparedness with an organization by a simple touch of a button or two.  By simply making a phone call or sending an e-mail or text message we are able to warn others about disasters.  “For example, simple phone warnings saved many lives in South Asian countries during the 2004 tsunami,” (APCTT, 2007, p. 19). 

First, with new technology new cell phones are updated every year. There are new cell phones such as PDA’s, tablets (that are phones), Smart Phones, Blackberries, and IPhone’s. Today these phones allow people to do everything from watching movies, surfing the web, shopping and the favorite thing to do for most people is texting.
