Physical Education — Possible Death for Both, PE Classes and Students Involved

While I was in high school, physical education was not really popular, especially with the upper-classmen. There was one day a week, normally a Friday where our whole class would play matt-ball. Matt-ball is just like kickball, but played in the gym with wall matts as bases. Also, once on base, any said person could run around the bases and score as many times as they could before they got hit with the ball and ultimately be called out. And when I said the whole class, I mean everybody. On other days, I would say about fifty to sixty percent of the class showed up to class. Of that fifty or sixty percent, about twenty to thirty percent actually exercised and did the daily games. However, that was not the case on Matt-ball Friday. One hundred percent of the class showed up and participated, with some really heated battles along the way. The winning team would have bragging right for a week and it really kept the interest of many “non-athletes.” Week in and week out everyone could not wait until Friday was finally here, and not because the weekend was right around the corner either. “Fun-day Friday” got the whole class energized and ready to have some fun while exercising.

The commitment to physical activity and physical education is needed now more than ever. More and more schools and even states are cutting physical education classes across the United States. The thought of kids going all day without doing any exercise is just a nightmare. That is a main reason why the whole nation needs to look at the “big” picture. Most kids today would certainly rather play video games or sit around and be couch potato’s than go out and shoot basketball or play roller hockey. Kids seem to have less passion to be fit and active as the generations continue to trickle down. This is a huge reason why physical education needs to be mandated and kept in schools instead of disregarding the problem.
