Starbucks: Global Quest 2006 is the best yet to come?

Starbucks is the largest coffee retailer in the United States and is fast approaching the largest coffee in the world. However it didn’t start that way, now with more than 17,000 stores worldwide this coffee giant started out with one store in the world famous Pike’s place market. This store did not offer coffee by the cup but taught people about coffee and the wonders of roasting coffee. This tiny store turned into a very busy hub of coffee enthusiast’s and those with no coffee knowledge looking to gain the experience to make that perfect cup of coffee. With a company thought process like “Every day, we go to work hoping to do two things: share great coffee with our friends and help make the world a little better,” (http://www.starbucks.com/about-us/our-heritage) how could a company like this not survive and thrive.

While some people dream of starting a business that succeeds and profits others dream bigger. Howard Schultz came to Seattle hoping to see this company that was buying so much of his company’s product. He was interested in the kind of business that would be profitable and successful for years and generations to come. He had to push his way into this company that he believed could be just that, he pushed his ideals and company aspirations onto Jerry Baldwin and Gordon Bowker, who at the time owned the small franchise. In this paper I will go over the company’ strengths and weakness, the opportunities the company has, and the threats that could change the outcome for this company.

The company’s components of organizational environment are an explanation of the company’s strengths and weaknesses. One of the strengths is that they are a leading retailer and roaster for brand name specialty coffee throughout the world.
