Megan Willey - Module 5

As I have been observing Japan and China, I have seen many things. From Japan they seem to strive to have a capital city and a central area of power, which does reap benefits. Also, they keep the roads that lead from this main city to their main trade ports well maintained and guarded which allows them to import and export with ease. Politically under this ruler they have, Tokugawa Ieyasu, many report to feel more united than ever before. Internally as a nation they have found peace for now, so they are using their soldiers in other beneficial ways. They are becoming more educated and used to the more elite society they are living in so they are able to adapt with this growing bureaucracy. Japan will stay strong if they continue in this way and are able to move west.

While in China, who is under the Qing ruling, they are also taking steps in a direction that Russia could learn from. First they, the manchus, learned quickly that they needed to adapt to the Chinese policies in order to stay successful. China now has a huge population and manufacturing skills that are bringing in ship from all over, especially western Europe, which is helping the nation to strive. They also have so much control over their trading that they denied the Portuguese completely in 1522, a nation that once terrified most of the world. As the Chinese empire grows, I think they may fear us becoming too strong and I believe we need to take note. However, there are so flaws that could lean to China becoming weaker, espeically with neighboring Japan striving.

Understanding their ideals and policies will help us strive. How will prepare if Japan or China decides to attack us? What steps can we take to make our nation and capital one others want to model?
