HIS/135 The American Experience Since 1945

What would it have been like to live under threat of nuclear war? Although I cannot know for sure, what living in a period as such, I can only imagine an immense amount of fear and nervousness bestowed upon the American people. Fear of the unexpected, the unknown, survival and exactly what my own actions would be. The fear instilled back then can be compared to the fear some face today with terrorism, with possible attacks from the Middle East, the American’s must always remain prepared.

Survival Secrets for Atomic Attacks were given to the American citizens by the Federal Civil Defense Agency for a sure way to survive the nuclear war (Brinkley, 2012). Was it enough? A simple duck and cover method was all it took to survive an extremely powerful nuclear bomb, stronger than any bomb used in the United States (Brinkley, 2012). How could one agency be so sure? Their answer: lessen the chances of being struck by falling objects, prevention of burns, and not lose your head (Brinkley, 2012). Despite their positivity, I am not sure if this would be a secure enough method to keep myself or my family alive. It definitely would not be enough for me to keep my stress levels down, if all I had to depend on was little media coverage by radio, television and newspaper.

High tension between the United States and the Soviet Union, the fear of the Atomic bomb are similar to society today. Tension still lies between the United States and Middles east. Since the attacks of 9/11 in New York, using our own Air Planes against us, poses the question of having Americans wondering, will it happen again? Media coverage is entirely different now than it was back then. Internet, social media, radio coverage, newspaper, and other media outlets provide us with far more coverage.

In Conclusion, fear is still bestowed upon the American people. Not as high as it could have been...
