Writing Assignment 1

Caffeine and coffee can improve the development of hyperglycemia. Since it has been studied that caffeine induces energy expenditures which may prevent the development of obesity, can coffee and caffeine prevent the development of hyperglycemia in mice? Well the researchers in this study conducted an experiment to prove just this and were correct.

The scientific method consists of five parts: A question, hypothesis, prediction, test, and analysis. The scientist in the study followed all the steps in the scientific method when conducting this experiment. The question was can coffee and caffeine prevents hyperglycemia in mice. Hypothesis was coffee and caffeine can prevent hyperglycemia in mice. If mice are given coffee or caffeine then no sign of diabetes will erupt was the prediction the scientist had. Experiment was to give mice coffee, water, and a caffeine solution and take blood to measure serum insulin, triglyceride, and total cholesterol. Analysis was that the caffeine and coffee did prevent the development of hyperglycemia in mice.

There were a total of 31 four week old mice divided into 2 groups. The first experimental group was broke in to a control group of 11 mice and experimental group of 10. The control group was given water and the experimental group was given diluted black coffee for a total of weeks in which blood samples were collected from the tail every week. For experiment group two that consists of 10 mice followed the same procedures as experiment group 1. The difference between these groups was the control group consists of 5 mice and was given water and the remaining 5 mice made up the experimental group which were given a caffeine solution.

To include each mouse was given the same amount of food daily. They were a 12 hr light/dark schedule. The researchers realized that it was the increase in insulin resistance that caused the suppressive effect on hyperglycemia.

I am not sure if this made a big difference...
