Vocabulary Performance of the Freshmen in SDSSU- Main Campus

Abstract
Words are the central elements in the social system of communication. Words are recognized as tools of thought. The primary purpose of this study is to determine the vocabulary performance of the freshmen students in Surigao del Sur State University– Main Campus.
Two hundred eighty three from the total freshmen students enrolled in the second semester of the academic year 2010-2011 are utilized as respondents of the study. The Researchers employed the proportional random sampling in order to obtain the needed respondents. The actual number of respondents was determined using the Sloven’s formula.
Of the 980 freshmen students, 419 of students belonged in CECST, 273 from CAS, 208 from CBM while only 80 students came from CTE. Through the sampling procedure employed, 121 respondents were identified for CECST, 79 for CAS, 60 for CBM while only 23 for CTE comprising a total of 283 samples for the present academic undertaking.
The researchers used a standardized test. In the analysis of the result of the survey, a scale was used. The test had 3 parts. The first part deals with verbal analogy with ten items. Second part is on context clue with another ten items and finally the connotation and denotation. Respondents were given 40 minutes to finish all the items in the vocabulary assessment.
The instrument is interpreted through four descriptive ratings. Students who obtained a score of 18-25 got an excellent rating. Those who attained 12-17 were rated good and, those who scored within 6-10 were rated satisfactory. Those who obtained a score between 0-5 were given a needs improvement rating. This study utilized the weighted Mean to answer the 1st problem while one way anova between groups analysis of variance with Post Hoc test was employed to answer the 2nd problem.
