The internet is becoming an increasingly popular method of lead generation.

Lead generation is the process of generating interest in a product or service via direct marketing. This could be through telemarketing, email and SMS marketing or even direct mail. Often companies outsource their lead generation, and pay another company to generate the interest, leaving them free to convert this interest into a sale. When this occurs, they often pay per lead that is generated. A lead is the contact details of a customer that has shown an interest in the product or service available, and wishes to purchase it or maybe have a survey for example.

Typically, lead generation is associated with double glazing sales people contacting elderly homeowners and pressurising them into buying new windows. This however, is not always the case; the internet is becoming an increasingly popular method for businesses to use for lead generation. An online lead is generated in a different way, it involves the customer taking the first step, and that’s why they are often worth more to the client.

For an online lead to be generated, a customer must find a website that they are interested in buying a product or service from, they then enquire for more information. As the customer has enquired themselves, it is more likely that this interest is genuine, and they have not been pressurised into asking for more information. However, the traditional methods such as telemarketing should not be disregarded. Just because a customer hasn’t enquired themselves, it doesn’t mean that they do not have an interest.

There are many different products and services that can be sold through lead generation, the most popular being financial services and home improvements, including debt management and solar panels for example.
