Subject: Customs and cultural habits in America

The United States of America is a multicultural country with people arriving here from different parts of the world to live the American dream. Every individual is given an equal opportunity to pursue his dream based on his ability or achievement.

People arriving into the United States generally do not find it very difficult to settle down, as people are very friendly and welcoming. However, before arriving to the United States you should know the below mentioned customs and cultural habits of the people living here.

* Arriving on time is taken seriously in the United States and is considered to be impolite. However, if you are late for any reason for a meeting, please inform the concerned person at least half an hour before the start of the meeting.

* Smoking in Public is prohibited in the United States. Also, different states have different laws on smoking and it would be wise to check the same before you arrive to the city.

* Most Americans do not like to discuss their salaries or how much money they spent on something. Asking such questions is considered to be rude

* Tipping in restaurants is a common thing here. Usually, 15% – 20% is the standard tipping policy. You can leave the tip on the tray once you get your change back from the server.

* Drinking and driving is a serious offense in the United States and should be avoided under all circumstances.

* Discussing Politics, religion, homosexuality in public should be avoided as it may offend someone you don’t know.

* Racist remarks are taken very seriously here and should be avoided.

* Speaking loudly on cell phone in public is considered to be rude.

* Most people here prefer a handshake. Hugging and kissing at the first meeting should be avoided

* Women should be treated with respect at all times.

* Sir and Madam are used to give respect to an elderly person....
