INTRODUCTION

Before the boom of social media we relied on paper applications, dating agencies, the newspaper, and family reunions. If people wanted to find out how their high school crush turned out; they had to wait until their high school reunion. Businesses relied on more traditional means of advertisement. Before social media, networking was difficult and time consuming in both social and professional lives. The research question for this paper is: “What are the effects of social media on society?”.

In 2004, Facebook was launched as a Harvard only social network by a computer geek in his early twenties. By 2008 Facebook had dominated all other social networks. It went from college kids using it to fortune 500 companies, grandparents, military, and presidential candidates using it.
