Relationship between Private and Public Police

There is a volatile relationship between private and public security. This is a relationship that is rocky but vital to every community. While both industries are necessary to our safety there are many factors that interfere where the two mesh. A few of the problems include lack of respect, lack of communication, a lack of cooperation, competition and how it is perceived, lack of standards and perceived corruption. The gray lines in between private and public security can sometimes become a war zone. Regardless of issues between the two industries they must work together in order to achieve the same overall goal.

Public police officers are generally required to handle detection of crime, crime prevention, crime control, crime investigation, crime reporting, information security and the apprehension of suspects. Private security officers can do each of the same responsibilities as public police officers however they generally focus more on the security of particular individuals or places. Private security also dwells intently on the protection assets, immediate deterrence, and commercial enforcement (Identifying and Exploring Security Essentials, 2004). It is apparent that the job responsibilities of private and public law enforcement intertwine in many different ways. This is why it is so vital that this ongoing feud between public and private security cease to exist. The lack of respect is the first issue with the two groups. One or the other may feel as if they had to work harder to obtain their position or may feel that their job is harder or more intense than the other. This builds a lack of respect between private and public officers. Since there is breakdown in the respect for each other then of course lack of communication is inevitable.
