Suki also had a hard time adjusting to the language, according to her, her first American word was F.O.B “Fresh off the Boat”, and she didn’t understand that when she was never in a boat but on a plane. Suki had to take up English as a second language in order to be able to better communicate with her peers. Suki also stated that there was a generation difference between the Korean-Americans and the Koreans.

I think that the purpose of this particular memoir, is to not only express how she felt as a child having to adjust to new things and situations in her life, but to also show that everyone is not the same and that people end up in certain situations for any reason, and don’t judge a person off of looks but by their life experiences. The genre is literary, it is like a mini autobiography. The audience is anyone who can relate to the situation whether you are foreign and moving to America or an American moving across seas. I feel even a person that is living in their same country can relate I say that because Suki only came to America because her parents brought her here so her father would not go to jail, but if he wasn’t facing jail time and they could have stayed in Korea, she would have been living in poverty there, it just may have been worse.

I think her tone in this memoir at first was sad and a little sorrowful but as time progressed and she became adjusted, Suki sounded a little bit more happy and hopeful, especially due to the fact her family was able to move out the rundown apartment to a better neighborhood , because they found better jobs that allowed them to do so.
