In this day and time we see leadership as a good thing. Leadership is the “stickum” that unifies the leader and the subordinate together to achieve a common goal while creating positive change that will be beneficial, in some sense, to society. We like to think of our leaders in the positive, that they do the right thing as well as motivate and empower others to achieve their highest potential, thus creating new leaders. Subordinates have various levels of commitment to the ideas of the leader. There are many instances in which we are reminded of circumstances where bad decision making, dysfunctional organization, wasted resources, deception, ruined careers, plans that have not worked or the lack of planning, or the downward slope or the termination of an organization has demonstrated that not everything that some leaders do are positive, effective or ethical. (Pierce, Newstrom, 2011) It is fair to say that there are leaders who have lost touch with what is real and use their position of power to promote themselves and their agenda.

According to the Oxford Dictionary, Machiavellianism is the “employment of cunning and duplicity in politics or in general conduct.” This concept comes from the Italian Renaissance writer Niciolo Machavelli. In modern day psychology, this term is used to describe one of the ”dark triad” personalities (narcissism, psychopathy and Machiavellianism) that is distinguished by hypocrisy of interpersonal style, sarcastic beliefs and the testing of the concepts of morality.

Machiavellianism describes a person’s tendency to be emotionally cool and detached, with no sense of morality; which makes it easy to manipulate others. This concept is related to cold selfishness.
