Diversity in the workplace: Women, people of color and GLBT

Introduction

The world is getting to be more global, and as new markets emerge, companies have to maximize all their resources. This paper will describe social demographics of the United States labor for in regards to women, people of color and Gays, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender people. As a global phenomenon, diversity is affecting U.S companies as well as multinational companies. Globalization is one of the driving factors affecting the many large organizations regardless of location ( ). More and more companies are conducting business globally and making diversity a priority is of the utmost importance. Appreciating diversity promotes a setting that compliments and embraces differences by making a work setting that take full advantage of the potential of all personnel.

The primary aspect for the diversity change in the workplace is the result of the United States changing demographics. This change is also greatly affecting the United States labor force. According to the 2012 Census (Census Bureau), people who don't identify as white or Caucasian will certainly constitute higher than a third of the U.S. population by 2015, leading to half that for 2050. It anticipates by 2010, the actual Hispanic population in the U.S. may be the biggest ethnic group in the United States (Census 2012).

According to the latest Census, the United States population by 2020 will be more than 164 million people. This represents a 5.9 percent growth from our current population (Griffith 2012). The United States is undeniably increasing in diversity. Thirty-six percent of the current labor force as of July 2012 is people of color. The breakdown of the U.S labor force is as followed:

* Non-Hispanic White makes up 64 percent of the labor force

* 16 percent is Hispanics

* 12 percent are African Americans

* Five percent are Asians.
