Trades of Negotiation

For many decades the art of negotiation was used. Negotiation has/is used in purchasing items ranging from a simple yo-yo to larger items such as a house or car. So, what is negotiation? “Negotiation is nothing but a discussion among individuals to reach to an alternative which would satisfy all” (MSG.com, 2013). To put into more simple terms, it is a compromise for all parties involved that allows everyone to walk away happy with the terms or items. The only way to effectively negotiate is through communication (MSG.com, 2013). Although, personality “also plays a large role in negotiations” (Zboch, 2013). For instance, when purchasing a car these factors come in to play. To illustrate communication and personality in negotiation I will use my last experience purchasing a new car.

April 2008 was a month to learn from. The biggest reason was the purchase of my car. This was my first experience of buying a new car. From the time I was little, I remember being told to always negotiate with car dealers; no matter what the price or offer is. Before purchasing my car I looked up “secrets of the trade’ or in other words advice on how to communicate (what to say/do) and how to act (personality). How did it go? Let me just say it was a like a roller coaster, up to the top then down a long spiral. My communication and personality in negotiation did not hold up to the standards. There was definitely some brushing-up and learning I could have done in order to have a better outcome. My confidence entering the lot/dealership was sky high. I had my eye on the prize and knew what I did and did not want to be offered. I kept in mind all the tips I looked up on the internet and what my absolute highest price would be.
