“Correctional officers maintain security and inmate accountability to prevent disturbances, assaults, and escapes. They have no law enforcement responsibilities outside of the prison institution where they work. Correctional officers maintain order within the prison and enforce rules and regulations. To help ensure that inmates are behaving and obeying rules, correctional officers monitor their activities and supervise the work assignments of inmates. Often time’s officers must search inmates and their living quarters for contraband like weapons or drugs, settle disputes between inmates, and enforce discipline.” A strong work ethic is required. Dedication and an understanding of the importance of the job are necessary.

The position is not for the shy, reserved, or one minded individuals. You must have confidence, courage, and a basic instinct to react quickly and make good decisions to any situation. This job reports higher incidents of work injuries than other careers. You can easily get lost in your profession when working in a prison. You must have an inner strength to separate your work life from your daily life.

“A high school diploma or its equivalent is the first requirement for individuals who want a career in corrections. They must be legal citizens of the U.S., at least age 18 to 21 and have no prior conviction records. Drug screenings, background checks, physical fitness requirements and oral or written exams are typical requirements. Corrections training, on-the-job training and often some college courses or work experience in handling individuals such as military or police experience are necessary.”
