for Food land Supermarkets

Food land is a chain of super markets, having 104 properties located at the prime spots in upper middle class localities of South Australia. Its air-conditioned stores are a treat to visit and to spend good family time shopping house-hold provisions – they are the favorite Sunday morning meeting spots and past time for many executive and business class families.

Food land Stores are locally, independently owned supermarkets. They display the largest variety in every product category of foodstuff including fresh vegetables and fruits, personal care and cosmetics and general house-hold provisions. These add up to about 2500 Stock Keeping Units (SKU).

Food land have set up a Central Warehouse in central Broken Hill, from where shop shelves are replenished three times a day. The average inventory level is maintained at 15 days of sales, depending upon items and vendors – the maximum being 45 days and minimum being 2 days.

Food land manages to get on an average 15% discount on printed MRP, which is the price at which the products are sold. In many cases, they are entitled to additional discounts up to 5% for buying bulk quantity or achieving quarterly sales targets. Further, immediate payment may earn additional 2% cash discount, while normal credit period is one month.

As a Business Consultant you are tasked with understanding the processes and building a Point of Sale system to meet the following general goals:

• Quick checkout for the customer

• Fast and accurate sales analysis

• Automatic Inventory control

The system will be state of the art and will have a Windows-based desktop interface, with all POS hardware in place.
