Pharmaceuticals produce varying products to capitalize on the expenditure during the research and development process. It was not until 1960 when the manufacturing company started producing pharmaceuticals with its flagship being cold relief medication and in 2001 the name Glaxo Smith Kline emerged through mergers and product line increases. This business proposal looks at how an active research and development process can be a variable cost and how to manage this cost while increasing revenue. The drug investigated is called Paxil and the compounded name is “paroxetine hydrochloride” (GSK.com) and its main purpose is to correct symptoms of depression by adjusting the chemical reactions in the brain. This mood corrective drug requires constant use and because the depression is sporadic by nature the research and development department has incorporated a controlled release feature that is triggered by a chemical imbalance. This feature allows for greater consumption because it reduces the need for a regular doctor (MD) visit for evaluation but on the other hand increases the need for a psychologist to evaluate.
