Think of an example of some critical thinking that you have done. What was the situation, and what did you consider in your critical thinking? How did you use the five categories of critical thinking?
Critical thinking occurs when a person thinks about a subject or problem to where the improvement of the quality of ones own thinking using skillful analogies, then assessing and reconstructing them. Critical thinking and logic go hand in hand. Logic basically means putting your thoughts in order (Geisler & Brooks, 1990, p. 11). One has to put their thoughts and ideas in order in order to think through something critically and come up with an appropriate solution or reaction. One area of my life where critical thinking was utilized was deciding on where I wanted to attend college, probably one the most important choices in a teenager's life. This was a difficult process for me that took months to decide. I utilized many facets that go into the critical thinking process. I followed steps a practiced critical thinker will do, I asked questions, collected all pertinent data, categorized common characteristics, logically analyzed all the information, and so forth in order to come up with a logical and proper conclusion. The five categories of critical thinking as defined by Hasse (2010) are conceptualizing, applying, analyzing, synthesizing, and evaluating information. These five strategies are key in the critical thinking model. For me conceptualizing all the vast information in regards to colleges, their location, dorms, and food options was the starting point. After all this information was made know I applied it to myself, and what would be the most logical/best choice for me and my needs. Lastly everything I collected I analyzed greatly. I weighed pros and cons, scholarship options, and just really wanted everything to be made clear.
