It is said that there is no place like home, but do you have a place which makes you feel closer to home? Beas is a very small riverfront town in Amritsar, Eastern Punjab. It lies on the banks of the river Beas. It is a place that I had often visited as a child and still visit every time I go to my country, India. It is my most favourite place on earth because it is very beautiful, peaceful and most importantly, it feels just like home to me.

Beas is a very beautiful town, because it is very clean and green. There is very little pollution in the air, and the streets and roads are free of garbage. There are also many farms full of trees and greenery in the town. Some of the crops grown on these farms are sugarcanes, corns, peas, eggplants and cauliflowers. During the summer, it is common to see mango trees laden with the ripe, yellow mangoes all over the town.

The people of the town of Beas volunteer to clean their streets and roads every day. This helps keep the town free of garbage and refuse. In Beas they use old ways of living to avoid pollution, such as using bicycles to go around the town instead of cars. Instead of sugar they use “Gud”, which is made by burning sugarcane juice into a hard substance. This low use of machinery and vehicles in the town helps keep the air free from pollution and the environment clean and green.

The location of Beas is very peaceful, as the town is very silent and the people are forbidden to bring cell phones and other electronic devices into the town. Cell phones and other electronic devices, which we think keep us connected to our loved ones are what distances us from them by keeping us preoccupied in our own worlds. But in Beas, I get some time to reconnect with my family because I am away from all the things that distance me from them.
