Course Overview

The objectives of this course are to provide an introduction to the study of international relations and a basic understanding of the issues, concepts, theories, actors, relationships and processes involved. There are no prerequisites for this course. By the end of the course, students should have improved their understanding of the complex character of international politics and gained and ability for evaluating analytically world events.

The class format will be a mixture of formal lecture, class discussion and case studies. This course is not designed to focus exclusively on current events. However, students are encouraged to keep abreast of international issues as we will incorporate these issues in class discussions. Students will want to read a major newspaper (e.g., New York Times, Washington Post), a good news magazine (e.g., The Economist) or watch a television news program on a regular basis.

Course Objectives

The course contains five main objectives. By the end of the course, students should be able to:

1. demonstrate a foundational knowledge of the key concepts, approaches, and features of global politics

2. read carefully and analyze articles, not only for facts, but also for arguments.

3. identify and discuss issues that shape global politics and events

4. construct and communicate clearly in both speech and writing convincing arguments.

5. know how to use Bryant’s resources to conduct research and identify relevant information outside the course.

6. explore global politics in further depth by taking advanced courses and being an engaged and informed participant in the political process.
