Initial Reflective Essay

The first thought that came to mind in the required reading was the fact that there are different rulings for similar decisions made by the parents of. In the first case involving Baby Theresa, her parents realize the fact that she is going to pass away soon and in their mind not even alive because she is being kept alive by a machine. They wish to donate her organs to help save a life of another child who is in dire need of these organs. In my opinion this would be a very hard decision to make by the parents but if they believe it is best for their child along with the keeping the best interest of society in mind (helping save someone else’s life) who are we to not allow this to happen? In the next story involving the conjoined the parents wish to try keeping both children alive even though there are greater risks of neither surviving if they are kept together. They are not allowed to do so and only one of the children survives. This is almost an identical scenario that involves parents’ wishes not be allowed because of law. It is my belief that if a parent has the best intent of their child they can make decisions for their child. Although in the third example involving the father killing his daughter who had cerebral palsy, I disagree with the moral reasoning. No person should be allowed to kill someone no matter the situation. Although I understand it may be tough on the individual with CP along with the family, it is not morally correct to take the life of another to end suffering. A family has the right to make the decision on life or death if they can help other people or wish to pray for a miracle but they do not have the right to kill that person themselves to ease the pain. Moral reasoning can get in the way of the truth but listening to ones morals can help come to the truth.
